vegetarian
n. A person who does not eat meat or fish. They may however, eat eggs, cheese and other dairy products. Ethical vegetarians often avoid fur or leather.
vegan
n. A strict vegetarian who eats plant products only, especially one who uses no products derived from animals, such as honey, fur or leather.
ahimsa
n. A Buddhist and Hindu doctrine expressing belief in the sacredness of all living creatures and urging the avoidance of harm and violence.
jai·gong slang. Cantonese for the word 'vegetarian' (useful word to know in a chinese restaurant).
May Potluck & Raw Demo by Bryan Au, author Raw in Ten Minutes Saturday, May 14: Socializing & Appetizers at 6:00 p.m.; Dining at 6:30 p.m.; Demo at 8:00 p.m. Reservations needed due to space limitations, 415-273-5481, first call basis. No one will be admitted without a reservation confirmation. Not wheelchair accessible. 218 Union Street #4, north side of cul de sac at top of the hill (parking difficult with hill and stairs to climb). Public transportation advised. Call MUNI at 415-673-6864 or call SFVS veg-line to car pool in San Francisco. $1 suggested donation for members, their guests, and students bringing food, $2 for non-members bringing food. Add $8 to each category without food. Bryan encourages everyone to bring food that is organic. Following the potluck, Bryan will demo his raw vegan Macaroni & Cheese, Raw Brownies, and Mango Cheese Cake. Bryan has just published his book, Raw in Ten Minutes, and will have it available at the potluck or check our website where $2 is donated to SFVS for each book sold, SFVS store. Look for his new restaurant that will be opening in May at 587 Post Street at Taylor and his new PBS television series scheduled later this summer or early fall.
