Fortunately the dance club is located down a long hall, so the restaurant doesn't suffer. Tea is also a specialty and works its way into many cocktails and in savory dishes such as the richly flavored curries. Chef Tim Luym (a Rising Star chef), who is Chinese and Spanish, grew up in Manila and has a real feel for various cuisines that comprise the interesting menu." The SF Chronicle previously named Poleng Lounge as one of the "Top 10 Restaurants of 2006" (link) and honored Poleng Lounge Chef Tim Luym as Rising Star Chef 2007 (link).

The December 2006 issue of Common Ground Magazine (link) raved over Poleng Lounge’s many vegetarian options, such as The Buddha’s Treasures (“small vegetable-filled dumplings in matcha tea-dusted wrappers . . . delicate and exquisitely seasoned”) and Poleng Curry (“full of vegetables and rich with coconut milk and tea-infused curry”). As noted in the Winter Issue 2007 of Vegetarian News, Poleng Lounge offers Tofu Triangles with rice wine sambal sauce at 25 cents each during its Happy Hour (4PM-6PM). Now he can say 'Vegetarians are Smarter'.

A scientific study by a Southampton University team in the British Medical Journal reports that the average vegetarian tend to have five IQ points more than the average person.

However, the report seems to indicate it isn't the exclusion of meat that makes one smarter because "there was no difference in IQ score between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarian but who reported eating fish or chicken."

In other words, there are really two groups here. The vegetarians, and the ones who perceive themselves to be vegetarian.

This may suggest that intelligent people tend to eat healthier and because of this they are more likely to gravitate towards a vegetarian diet. And because Brits tend to become vegetarian more out of ethics than for health reasons (the exact polar opposite to their American counterparts in my estimation), maybe there is a correlation between intelligence and empathy. I guess we'll have to wait for that study.

BBC - High IQ link to being vegetarian

Save the cow, save the world

No superpowers required; just go Vegetarian
A United Nations report is now saying what I've been saying all along: meat eating hurts the planet more than anything else.
A United Nations report has identified the world's rapidly growing herds of cattle as the greatest threat to the climate, forests and wildlife. And they are blamed for a host of other environmental crimes, from acid rain to the introduction of alien species, from producing deserts to creating dead zones in the oceans, from poisoning rivers and drinking water to destroying coral reefs.

The 400-page report by the Food and Agricultural Organisation, entitled Livestock's Long Shadow, also surveys the damage done by sheep, chickens, pigs and goats. But in almost every case, the world's 1.5 billion cattle are most to blame. Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together...
The Independent - Cow 'emissions' more damaging to planet than CO2 from cars

Happy Heart Book Club

This message is from Sam Halsey, for all San Francisco Bay Area residence and beyond:

Hello Happy Vegans:-)

I'm starting a new VEGAN book club “Happy Heart Book Club”.
Thinking we could start by reading John Robbins new book.

Please check out the link.
Please let me know what you think.
Please feel free to share this stuff with your friends.

Happy Heart Book Club

Peace,

sam

Free Video Night (Red Victorian Peace Café) Aug 25

“New Research on Vegan Diet & Health” by Dr. Neal Barnard, MD

Date: Friday, August 25, 2006
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Place: Red Victorian Peace Café
1665 Haight Street, near Ashbury, San Francisco

For more information, call 415-273-5481.
